The Department of Education has improved the school pre-registration process for the 2023-2024 academic year so that all students who have requested to complete a training cycle in ordinary call will be able to enroll in July and not in September, as was the case up to now. The only exception are the upper grade cycles that will assign the places on September 8.
The minister has assured that advancing the pre-registration dates, with an increase in the offer (273 new groups), will allow “all the students participating in the ordinary process to know before the start of the course the place they have been assigned” and that “they will not have to wait until mid-September, “as has happened in the twenty previous courses”.
With the new calendar set by Educació, the Government wants to avoid the collapse that occurred in past years in enrollments, exacerbated in the last 3 years by the pressure of demand, and which forced thousands of students to start classes at late September or early October, one month after school starts. In this course, the second phase of the ordinary process began on September 13, one week after the course began, and places were not assigned until September 21. Then an extraordinary call was opened for those who did not request to enter a cycle in April or May, and decided to do so in the following months.
In this way, a process has been shortened, which was one of the longest in all the autonomous communities, which will avoid the concern of families and their drift to other options such as private schools.
The measure requires a staffing of extra administrators in educational centers during the period in which places are awarded (from May to July), according to sources from the department.
The pre-registration dates, advanced by Radio Barcelona de La Ser and ratified by councilor Josep Gonzàlez-Cambray, are as follows.
4th ESO students for middle grade
The students with preference (4th of ESO, FP Básica, Escuela de Jovens and those who drop out of the 1st of baccalaureate) must pre-enroll between the 12th and 18th of April.
On April 28, the provisional list of accepted applications will be announced.
From May 28 to 3, a claim period opens. And on May 8, the list of admitted applications (training cycle, center and shift) will be published and the institutes will know the number of students who have requested to participate in their offers in the first request.
Last year, when the offer of 4th ESO was prioritized, 96% of the students were able to enter the cycle initially requested, which is a very high figure compared to previous courses (over 60%), and one of the Keys to avoid school dropout.
This year, when the prioritization in the application has been extended to those who drop out of 1st year of high school, students of adult schools and Basic Vocational Training, this success rate is expected to drop slightly.
Once the application submission period is over, the educational centers study each of the requests they have received: they analyze the data, the priority criteria that families request to be taken into account, and also the supporting documents.
Then, on June 14, the applications with the score will be published.
One of the key dates is June 30, when the final list of offers for places and the list of admitted and the waiting list will be released.
Once the final list of students admitted to each center has been published, the enrollment period for those pre-registered with an assigned place begins. The enrollment period for students with an assigned place is from July 3 to 7.
In the event that the young person does not have an assigned place, on July 20 they must go to the center where they requested it, where the waiting list will be managed in person and the list of vacancies will be offered.
In this way, real-time allocation of places has been ruled out so that families can choose another cycle, center or shift.
On July 24, the second phase of admission begins with the publication of cycle vacancies in educational centers. This will be offered on the website of each educational center, as well as on the department’s website.
If no place has been obtained in the requested centers, during this period you can extend the original requests and request places in centers that are available until July 27.
Students who can participate in the second phase of admission are sent an email with a link to the pre-registration application so that they can access and extend the applications.
Enrollment for these students will take place on July 31.
Middle grade: calendar for the rest of the students
The rest of the students must present the pre-registration applications between May 9 and 15. And the process will be similar to those of their 4th ESO classmates.
On June 30, the offer of places in the centers will be published, as well as the list of those admitted to cycles, shifts and centers.
Registration will be from July 3 to 7.
On July 20 there will also be a face-to-face act at each center for the list of vacancies.
On July 24, the vacancies will be published in all the territories (each center will publish its own and the website of the Department of Education will offer a map with all the offers that have become free). From there, the student will make his list of options again from July 25 to 27.
The list of admitted students will be published on July 31.
Calendar for higher grade
On May 25, the number of school places per center and course will be published.
From May 26 to June 1, applications are submitted and will be ordered according to priority criteria.
A month later, on June 26, and after analyzing the data and the priority criteria, the provisional list of applications on which claims can be made is published.
On July 6, the final list of places will be published and the draw will take place in the event of a tie.
On July 18, the final list of places by center and course will be released.
The registration period will take place from July 19 to 24.
If there are vacancies, the center will offer them in a public and face-to-face act on July 26.
For those students who have not entered any of the requested cycles, a second phase will open in September, on September 6 and 7.
No enrollment date has yet been set for this second phase of admission.
