The Florida Highway Patrol recently released dash camera footage showing a police pursuit of a stolen van in Northwest Miami-Dade that ended in a crash after officers performed a PIT maneuver, leading to the arrest of three suspects.
The incident took place on September 11 in the area of Northwest 27th Avenue and 62nd Street after a license plate reader alerted officials that a white Ford van had been reported stolen from Miami-Dade County. Officers located the van and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver ignored their commands and fled the scene by driving northbound in the southbound lanes of Northwest 27th Avenue.
Due to the driver’s aggressive actions and disregard for human life and property, law enforcement units disengaged, issuing a Be On The Lookout (BOLO) for the vehicle to nearby agencies. Hialeah Police and FHP troopers later located the van and initiated a pursuit, with FHP ultimately taking the lead and performing a PIT maneuver to stop the van.
Despite the initial ramming of the van by the trooper, the driver continued to flee until the stolen vehicle crashed into other vehicles at the intersection of Northwest 72nd Avenue and 74th Street. A second attempt at the PIT maneuver successfully brought the van to a stop.
The driver, identified as 34-year-old Roslan Ruiz, was then taken to the hospital for treatment before being charged with running from the police after a crash, resisting arrest, and grand theft. Additionally, Ruiz is wanted for aggravated assault on a driver in a separate incident prior to the pursuit of the stolen van. Two other individuals were also arrested in connection to the incident.
Roslan Ruiz is currently in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center awaiting his court appearance. The investigation into the stolen van and the events leading up to the crash is ongoing, with authorities continuing to gather evidence and information.
