Jon Rahm, current champion of the Augusta Masters, has started the RBC Heritage on the wrong foot after he put on the green jacket on April 10. This Thursday the player from Barrika finished eight shots behind the leader, the Norwegian Viktor Hovland, in the PGA Tour tournament. Rahm has signed a card of 1 (72 strokes) with three birdies and four bogeys.

The rain forced the suspension of the competition at the opening of this tournament held on Hilton Head Island (South Carolina, USA). The first day of the RBC Heritage was able to resume later when the rain stopped but some golfers did not complete their round due to lack of light at the end of the afternoon and will have to finish it on Friday.

“I hate making excuses, but I took a couple of swings at the end where I felt tired. On the 16th for example. And there I lost a shot (the last of the four bogeys) because I made a bad swing. As for the rest, I think I handled myself well with the rain and that. It could have been a much worse day. There are still three days to go back. It is supposed that Friday will be good in the morning and that will be an advantage”, declared the Basque.

Rahm was able to complete his first round, but on Friday he will have to improve to make the weekend cut. For his part, Hovland shone with a -7 (64 shots) thanks to 7 birdies without bogeys. The American Brian Harman follows closely with a -6, the same record as two golfers who could not finish their first day: the American Jimmy Walker with two holes still to play and the Englishman Aaron Rai with three still to play.

The Argentine Emiliano Grillo was the best Hispanic this Thursday with a -3 while the Colombian Nico Echavarría signed a 3.

Jon Rahm, who won the first Masters of his career on Sunday, became the fourth Spanish golfer to do so, and he did so on the 40th anniversary of his compatriot Seve Ballesteros’ second victory in Augusta, and on the day that the de Pedreña would have turned 66.
