The city of Barcelona is in suspense before the arrival of a polar cold wave and the possibility of snowfall during the second week of the new year. According to experts from the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat) and the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the early morning of Monday, January 8, was the coldest of the winter season in the mountain and hollow areas of northern Catalonia.
Although snow was initially ruled out in Barcelona, ??up to 16 Catalan regions, including Pallars Jussà, Noguera, Alt Urgell, Solsonès, Segarra, Conca de Barberà, Alt Camp, Anoia, Bages, Berguedà, Moianès, Lluçanès, Osona, Vallès Oriental, Garrotxa and Selva, they are on yellow warning for snow this week. The snow level is around 700 meters, which excludes Barcelona from snowfall, but not from the heavy rains that are forecast.
The rain, initially forecast for Tuesday 9 January, is now expected from midday on Wednesday 10 January. Experts predict more intense rains from 9 and 10 p.m. on the same day, with expected accumulations of more than 10 mm in Barcelona. The rainfall will last until Thursday, with a high probability of continuing to affect the city.
As for the weather, a sharp drop in temperatures is expected in Barcelona this Monday, with minimums that could reach minus six degrees. Strong gusts of wind and coastal phenomena will add to this situation, affecting the entire city. Starting on Wednesday, rain is forecast with a probability of 85%, which will affect not only Barcelona, ??but also the Baix Llobregat and Barcelonès regions.
This Sunday, the province of Barcelona experienced winds with gusts exceeding 90 kilometers per hour, which led the AEMET to activate alerts for wind and coastal phenomena. Despite these conditions, a sunny day with clear skies is anticipated, although the minimum temperatures will not exceed four degrees, and the maximum temperatures will reach 13 degrees.
In summary, Barcelona is facing a winter week marked by the uncertainty of snowfall, heavy rain and a significant drop in temperatures. Citizens and residents should prepare to face these weather changes in the coming days.
