Suspected of driving drunk with a car full of passengers, a Calistoga man Monday night crossed double yellow lines to pass another vehicle on Calistoga Road before losing control and crashing into a tree, according to the Highway Patrol.
Driver Victor Hernandez, 26, had to be cut free from the wrecked Honda Accord, his left foot essentially amputated at the ankle, the CHP said Tuesday.
A back seat passenger who wasn’t wearing his seat belt suffered major internal injuries and two female passengers had cuts and bruising.
The crash happened at 10:30 p.m. as Hernandez headed toward Calistoga on the east Santa Rosa route. Approaching St. Helena Road Hernandez passed another vehicle by illegally crossing over the yellow lines, the CHP said. The Honda drifted off the roadway and crashed head on into the tree.
Officers reported that all four people in the car were under the influence of alcohol.
Hernandez was released to the hospital for treatment and will be charged with suspected felony drunken driving when discharged, the CHP said.
