In Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia we can contemplate this series of photographs of the landscape of the Vall d’en Bas, under the Puigsacalm, with the sunflowers and rainbows that have arisen from the irrigation of the corn fields, under the gaze of the hermitage of Sant Miquel de Castelló from the top of the mountain.

Sant Miquel de Castelló is just above the village of Els Hostalets d’en Bas. It stands out on a buttress of the Serrat de Sant Miquel, within the sierra de los Llancers, in the last buttresses of the northeast of the Collsacabra massif. The panorama from the viewpoint of this hermitage encompasses the entire Vall d’en Bas, Olot and the Pyrenees.

The landscape of the Vall d’en Bas is surrounded by mountain ranges and rugged ridges such as those of Cabrera dels Llancers, Freixaneda or Puigsacalm, as well as meadows and forests of beech, holm and oak trees. In the images we can see how the mountain, in the background, seems to envelop the sunflowers.

Sunflower is a crop that is not very demanding regarding the type of soil, although it prefers clay-sandy soils rich in organic matter, but it is essential that the soil have good drainage and the water table is shallow.

For its part, the Puigsacalm is a mountain of 1514 meters of altitude. It is the highest point of the Cordillera Transversal. At its top there is a geodesic vertex. This mountain is within the domain of the municipality of Vall d’en Bas, in the region of Garrotxa.
