The passing of Ingozi, the elderly African male lion at the Saint Louis Zoo, has left many saddened. The zoo announced on Monday that they had to make the difficult decision to humanely euthanize Ingozi due to advanced liver and spinal disease. Ingozi, who was known for his impressive roar and magnificent mane, leaves behind his partner, the 19-year-old female lioness Cabara, and several litters of cubs.
Ingozi was born in 2007 at the San Diego Zoo and had been a beloved resident at the St. Louis Zoo ever since. The Animal Care and Animal Health teams at the zoo had been providing care to Ingozi throughout his time there, but unfortunately, his health had been declining due to his age and illness.
The zoo shared the news on Facebook, expressing their sorrow at the loss of Ingozi. They described him as a majestic lion who will be greatly missed by his care team and all who knew him. Ingozi’s passing serves as a reminder of the fragility of life, even for the strongest and most majestic creatures in the animal kingdom.
As we mourn the loss of Ingozi, it is important to remember the important conservation work that zoos like the Saint Louis Zoo do to protect and preserve endangered species like African lions. Through education, research, and breeding programs, zoos play a vital role in ensuring the survival of these magnificent animals for future generations to enjoy.
Ingozi’s legacy will live on in the memories of those who had the privilege of knowing him and in the conservation efforts that continue to protect his species. May he rest in peace, knowing that he was loved and cherished by all who had the pleasure of crossing his path.
