The Board of the Congress of Deputies has reactivated on Tuesday the investigation commission of Operation Catalonia that the plenary session approved to create on September 15, 2022, but which until now had been paralyzed due to the groups’ lack of will. According to sources from the chamber, the Table -with the votes in favor of the PSOE and Podemos and the votes against of PP and Vox- has opened the term for the formations to designate their representatives in the commission. They have a margin until March 21 to do so. Once the representatives have been chosen, the commission will still have to be constituted and prepare a work plan for possible appearances, which must also be voted on.

The Board’s decision comes six months after the plenary session approved the creation of the commission. It was on September 15, 2022, when the PSOE and Unidas Podemos voted in favor of an initiative by ERC, Junts, PDeCAT, CUP, Bildu and BNG. It was approved with 191 votes in favor -including a new vote by mistake of PP deputy Alberto Casero-, 153 against and one abstention.

The commission’s mission is to investigate “the alleged irregularities that link senior police officials and commanders, as well as their relationship with possible private networks or pressure lobbies, the possible interference in the sovereignty of other countries and the connections of this plot with the called ‘Operation Catalonia’”. Also the alleged interference with the sovereignty of Andorra by Spanish political leaders, as well as the alleged parapolice networks within the framework of that operation.

PSOE and Podemos have reactivated the process after last week the deputies of Junts, PDeCAT, BNG, ERC, EH-Bildu and CUP presented a letter to the congressional table to open the period for appointing representatives.

The step forward comes coinciding with the publication this Tuesday, by La Vanguardia, of new information on the operation of Operation Catalunya. This newspaper has revealed that it was activated just after the independence demonstration of the Diada of 2012 in a meeting at the Ministry of the Interior.
