More than 100,000 Armenian refugees have already left Nagorno-Karabakh and arrived in Armenia since last Sunday. This Friday the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, requested urgent support for the humanitarian emergency in Armenia.

The figure represents 83% of the population of the enclave, Azerbaijani separatist territory inhabited by Armenians that will be reintegrated into the legal and administrative system of Azerbaijan after last week’s Azeri military operation.

“At this moment 100,417 displaced people from Nagorno Karabakh have arrived in Armenia,” said Nazeli Baghdasarián, spokesperson for Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinián, at a press conference.

According to UNHCR, authorities are providing temporary accommodation to new arrivals who do not have family in Armenia. Hotels, social centers and schools are used. But, for the UN agency, given the “enormous volume of arrivals in such a short period of time, more emergency centers are needed.”
