Jane Fonda is one of the most recognized figures on the American acting scene. Winner of two Oscars, two BAFTAs, seven Golden Globes and one Emmy, she has an exemplary resume on the big screen. She from Klute to The Groom’s Mother and The Butler, she through many other films such as Dance, Dance, Damned, The China Syndrome or The Human Pack, in a career of more than 60 years.

For reasons like this, his arrival at the Cannes Festival this past Tuesday became a true spectacle of flashes and lenses. The New Yorker came to the event to witness her inaugural screening of the French film Le Deuxieme Acte (The Second Act) starring Léa Seydoux. Once this moment was covered, the interpreter had the opportunity to talk about her life with a multitude of media outlets.

One of the lucky ones was the French branch of ELLE magazine, with a short video of questions that they shared through the TikTok platform. There, the 86-year-old actress expressed her discontent with some words that her father told her through her wives when she was little. The publication’s question was about beauty advice, but Fonda took it to the realm of advice that she would have liked to hear.

In her own words, she wished her father had told her when she was little that she was “beautiful,” instead of commenting that she was “fat.” The actress pointed out that her words were not said directly to her, but that she first mentioned them to one of the five women she had, before they told her that she should lose weight. For this reason, Fonda points out, she developed an eating disorder when she was young.

“If they had made me feel beautiful when I was a girl, my life would have been very different,” she explained to the interviewer, before he asked her how she ended up getting rid of her problems. She confessed that it happened after marrying a man that she did consider beautiful, but that since it was a man who had to tell her (her third husband, Ted Turner), she didn’t quite gel. Being single was what finally convinced her.

“Then, when I was single I started to dazzle. She was 65 years old,” the interpreter clarified with a laugh, who was one of the most photographed during the inaugural red carpet in Cannes. Thanks to a suit-style jumpsuit with flower embroidery and rhinestones at the height of the torso, specially made by the Elie Saab brand, the New York native focused all eyes on her.
