“Neither by action nor by omission”. In these very forceful terms, PSC, ERC, Junts, Commons Sumar and the CUP signed a commitment yesterday, under the motto “Unity against the extreme right”, under which they will not accept the votes of either Vox or Aliança Catalana ” to form an eventual majority of investiture or, evidently, of the Government”.
Representatives of the five political formations agreed to “not legitimize” any of these two far-right formations, to reject their votes to achieve majorities in the Parliament and prevent their initiatives from prospering, as well as to try to leave them out of as many institutions as possible. In short, isolate Vox and Aliança Catalana after the Parliamentary elections next Sunday.
They labeled the manifesto to “close the way” to the ultra-right promoted by the platform Unity against Fascism and Racism Alicia Romero, by the PSC; Lluís Mijoler, por Comuns Sumar; David Caño, for the CUP; Najat Driouech, by ERC, and Glòria Freixa, by Junts.
Specifically, the text makes explicit the commitment to establish the necessary agreements to prevent the presence of the extreme right in the Parliament Table, the commission tables and to not subscribe to any parliamentary initiative from Vox and Aliança Catalana.
Likewise, they say that they will reach agreements to, “whenever possible”, avoid the presence of far-right formations in the institutional set of the Generalitat, the Parliament, the Government and institutions such as the Sindicatura de Greuges, among others.
Various recent polls suggest that Vox will maintain its seats in the Catalan Chamber – in the last elections it obtained 11 deputies – and Aliança Catalana, led by the mayor of Ripoll, Sílvia Orriols, could enter with between one and three seats.
After signing the agreement, the representatives showed their satisfaction at renewing the pact that they have already been applying against Vox in the last legislature.
Thus, Romero recalled that the commitment against the extreme right of his party is “unequivocal” and that if the Catalans give them their trust, they will form a Government with the support of the democratic forces, while Freixa pointed out that, as the granddaughter of Republicans, “ I am clear about the danger of fascism” and stressed that Junts always joins these pacts when they are “invited.” Driouech stated that “in the same way that ultras attack people like me, in the future they may do the same with your children, for example for loving people of the same sex.”
Asked if they would prefer to repeat elections than accept the abstention of the extreme right to form the Government, PSC, ERC and Junts indicated that they are confident of not being in that dilemma after 12-M.
