The new interim teachers or those who present themselves for oppositions in Catalonia must accredit the C2 level of Catalan from the 2025-26 academic year. This is stipulated in the project of the new decree of the linguistic regime that is being prepared by the Department of Education, which has been advanced by El País and which also regulates the use of Catalan and Spanish at school. Catalan will be the vehicular language and also for communication between families, while Spanish will be the curricular language.
In this way, and according to the draft of the decree presented this Monday by Educació, interim teachers, substitutes, new directors and appointments that involve a change of position or promotion must prove the C2 level. Foreign language teachers will be required to accredit level B2 in primary and C1 in secondary education.
In addition, the new decree formalizes that Catalan will be the vehicular language in educational centers, but also for communication with families, with the exception of those newcomers who do not know the official languages. The text points out that the use of Catalan should not be the same in all centers and points out that in those where “a lack of oral and written skills is detected… linguistic immersion programs should be applied”. In this way, each center must stipulate the presence of the two official languages ??depending on their sociolinguistic situation.
For its part, Spanish will be considered for “curricular and educational use for some specific content.”
