Sirin Hamsho, the General Electric Co. engineer from Niskayuna who made headlines when she was stuck in Qatar following the chaotic roll-out of President Donald Trump’s immigrant travel ban, is back home in Niskayuna.
“Finally home, safe and sound,” Hamsho said in Feb. 26 post to her Facebook page.
Hamsho, whose husband also works for GE, is a dual citizen of Syria and France.
But at the time, U.S. authorities were not allowing anyone from Syria and six other predominantly Muslim countries back into the country because of Trump’s ban on citizens from those countries entering the U.S., even dual citizens.
Hamsho was in Qatar on a business and personal trip and appeared on at least two Al Jazeera programs while in Qatar, where Al Jazeera is based. Hamsho is also a budding film maker.
Hamsho’s husband told the Times Union earlier this month that her situation was cleared up when U.S. officials said that dual citizens could enter the country as long as they showed a passport from a non-banned country, like France.
A federal court has stayed the travel ban.
Trump has said he plans to issue a new travel ban that could withstand a court challenge, although no new executive order has been issued yet.
However, on Monday, Hamsho said that she is getting off Facebook and will only post to Twitter.
“Dear friends and followers,” Hamsho wrote in Arabic on Facebook Monday. “I’m closing my account on Facebook for some time and I’ll be there via Twitter just, my account on Twitter for whoever wants to follow-up and continue: https://twitter.com/serenehamsho . Whatsapp closed too.”
