PATERSON — A city firefighter was fired after he was caught on camera shoveling snow while on workers’ compensation, a report said.

Fire Captain James Reyes was terminated following a court decision earlier this month after the city brought charges against him, the Paterson Times reported.

Surveillance footage allegedly caught Reyes shoveling snow, bending, lifting and carrying while he was on leave due to work-related injuries.

Reyes was charged with conduct unbecoming of a public employee and dishonesty in relation to a workers compensation claim. The case is allegedly being referred to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s office for criminal prosecution.

A 25-year veteran of the fire department, Reyes earned $148,922 a year, the newspaper reported.

The move comes as the city is looking to crack down on workers’ compensation claims.
