Mayor Bill de Blasio is set to announce a plan for about 90 new homeless shelters, the New York Times reported Monday, with plans to distribute centers evenly across the five boroughs.
The city is struggling to house a growing population of homeless New Yorkers—which first topped 60,000 in 2015—turning to hotels to absorb overflow from packed shelters.
The new plan will add additional capacity to a network of about 275 shelters operated by the Department of Homeless Services. The mayor is also weighing an “equity plan” which would require the shelter population to be distributed evenly through the city’s neighborhoods, the New York Post reported.
