ALBANY – The $78 million Capital Center at Howard and Eagle streets in downtown Albany will open Wednesday, in time for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball tournaments at the adjacent Times Union Center.

The opening of the Capital Center will be marked with a 2 p.m. ceremony.

The Capital Center, with a second-level space large enough to hold three full-size basketball courts, likely will provide not only practice space for participating teams, but a place to host FanFest activities as well, Doug McClaine, Capital Center’s general manager, told the Times Union earlier this year.

It is appropriate that the MAAC Tournament will be the first event: Capital Center leaders hope the construction of the sprawling conference center next to the Times Union Center on South Pearl Street will encourage the NCAA to bring rounds of the annual March Madness basketball tournament to Albany.
