Pet owners often have questions about when to deworm their dog or cat, as well as how often this should be done. However, another fundamental aspect to take into account has to do with the method chosen for this, since there is more than one and they have certain differences between them. We mainly talk about deworming pills and pipettes, especially in the case of dogs, since these are the ones that usually go outside and are exposed to contact with fleas or ticks, which can transmit diseases and with which extreme precautions should be taken.

Although it is usually advisable to opt for more than one preventive method to reinforce the safety of pets, it is important to know how each of them works and what distinctions are seen between them. Since there are certain advantages and disadvantages that must be taken into account when choosing one or the other.

When it comes to external deworming, there are two especially popular types: pills and pipettes. The first consist of tablets that are administered to the animal orally. While deworming pipettes are a liquid solution that comes in a single-dose container and is applied to the animal’s skin. In both cases you must use one appropriate for the animal in question and use the dose that has been recommended by a veterinary specialist.

In the case of deworming pills, they work indirectly. That is, when the insect, for example, a tick, lands on the animal and bites it, that is when the effect of the tablet acts by poisoning the parasite and preventing it from laying eggs. However, it does not help to prevent the bite itself. On the other hand, pipettes do, since their objective is to prevent this contact, in addition to killing the insect in question.

Another differentiating point is its application formula. The pipettes are very easy to administer, since you only need to apply them to the scalp in key areas. Of course, a couple of days before and after its application you should avoid bathing the animal. And wash your hands very well after this process. On the other hand, the tablets are not so quick and easy, since you have to give them to the animal and some may resist and make this task very complicated. The duration of both is usually around a month, although it will always depend on each product in question.
