Tragedy Strikes as Man Fatally Shot in Car Crash on I-10 near Downtown Phoenix
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A tragic incident unfolded early Monday morning in downtown Phoenix as a man lost his life in a shooting that resulted in the closure of Interstate 10 in one direction for investigation. The westbound lanes of I-10 were shut down at the Deck Park Tunnel from 7th Street to 7th Avenue following the crash, where a severely damaged vehicle could be seen on the roadway.
According to Phoenix police, DPS troopers arrived at the scene of the crash and discovered a man inside the vehicle who had been shot at least once. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the man succumbed to his injuries.
As the investigation continues, drivers in the westbound lanes are being redirected off the freeway at 7th Avenue. Meanwhile, eastbound lanes are experiencing delays due to the curiosity of passing drivers. The closure of I-10 westbound at 7th Ave is a result of a law enforcement incident, with all traffic being required to exit at 7th Ave. Commuters are advised to anticipate delays and find alternate routes, as there is currently no estimated time for the highway to reopen.
The reopening of the westbound lanes remains uncertain at this time. This unfortunate event marks the second shooting occurrence on the I-10 in less than a week, following an incident where a man was shot on the I-10 in the west Valley the previous Thursday morning.
