How to choose and prepare your dog's house for winter

The drop in temperatures in a process that also affects pets. Just as we humans prepare our home by tuning up chimneys or installing thermal insulation, the selection and proper conditioning of dog houses is a determining factor in preventing colds among animals. If your dog sleeps outdoors and you want to provide him with the greatest possible comfort and safety this winter, you should take into account the tips detailed below.

Many times the appropriate shelter for your dog in winter will not be the same as in summer. Kennels built with resistant and waterproof materials will be the best guarantee to protect your pet from the cold and inclement weather such as rain or snow. In these cases, plastic or treated wood will act as the best insulators for your shelter.

Size is another important issue, as it must adapt to the characteristics of each animal. The kennel should be high enough for the dog to sit down and long enough for the dog to fully stretch out on the ground. Keep in mind that your pet will not have more heat than what its own body provides, so it will be even more difficult to keep a house that is too large warm.

The greatest heat loss will occur through the floor of the house. That is why placing it slightly elevated, at least a couple of centimeters above the surface, will be a first step to insulate it from the cold. If necessary, place a blanket or rug underneath. And remember what we said before about plastic! If you are unable to replace the shed, covering the roof of your existing one with a tarp will help mitigate heat loss.

You can also try to place it as close as possible to the façade, to take advantage of the heat it gives off, or next to a heat source if, for example, you have the boiler on the patio or in a shed. Placing the shed under a covered space will also help you minimize the impact of wind and rain.

Make sure your dog feels comfortable and warm inside the kennel. Place a specific mattress on the floor of the kennel along with a cushion and a blanket so that your dog can curl up and enjoy the best rest.

Another trick to protect it from the wind is to install a front door for the shed. This should allow easy access and exit for your pet, in order to prevent cold from entering the interior of the shelter. Finally, if you live in an area with an extremely cold climate, it is advisable to install additional insulating panels on the outside of the kennel so that your dog stays as warm as possible.
