Everything you need to know before taking your dog for a walk in the rain

No matter what happens, if there is one fact that does not change, it is the duty to take the dog for a walk, as every owner of these pets knows. It doesn’t matter if it’s hot or cold, snowy or windy, you should always provide him with his daily walks. Of course, it does not mean that you do not have to provide a ride in the best possible conditions. If it is very hot, the central hours of the day should be avoided and if it is very cold, and the animal needs it, it would be advisable to shelter it; rainy days also have their particularities.

Taking the dog for a walk when it is raining is one of the least desirable scenarios for any owner. However, to try to make it as least uncomfortable for both of you, it is important to put into practice a series of measures that will be carried out both in the moments before the walk and right after.

The first thing to take into account is the weather conditions, if it rains but it is feasible, you will be taken out for a walk. However, there is no reason to extend the walk, it is enough that the animal can relieve itself, there will be other more enjoyable moments to extend the time dedicated to the walk. Furthermore, if along the way you see how the rain increases in intensity, or even if a thunderstorm is beginning to form, it is best to return home.

Just as people protect themselves from the rain with umbrellas or raincoats, it is also a good idea to have an appropriate waterproof coat prepared for dogs, which will be put on in these cases. This will prevent it from getting soaked and keep its coat as dry as possible. Especially in the case of dogs with long hair, it would be a good idea to comb them before going out to prevent tangles from forming more easily.

Once the moment of walking in the rain has passed, a series of care must be provided to the dog. The first thing, as is evident, will be to clean its paws and also its ears, which may have become dirty from mud. In addition to accessories such as a raincoat or belt, if necessary.

Next, you have to dry it thoroughly. This is very important so that there is no moisture left in their fur, as this prevents possible health problems with their skin, such as irritation. For long-haired dogs, it will have to be brushed again.

Finally, there is nothing like offering a small reward for their behavior, especially for those dogs that do not particularly enjoy the rain. Although we must not forget that if the animal does not want to go out because it is raining, it should not be forced.
