A dog’s diarrhea is quite annoying for him and his human companion. The dog is unwell, in pain and apathy, while the human is worried about what is happening to his pet. In addition, the situation is complicated by the constant need to take him out so that he can alleviate his needs, as well as the frequency with which he will not be able to stand it and will do it indoors.

Dogs suffering from this condition is more common than we would like and can occur due to many different factors. In this sense, it is important to evaluate the possible cause to also determine how to proceed. It is always convenient to go to the vet as soon as possible to check the condition of our best furry friend and for the professional to prescribe the appropriate treatment.

It is advisable that the dog does not eat anything for at least 12 hours so that its stomach can discard any toxic substance or food if that is the root of its problem. During fasting and diarrhea, it is essential that the dog stays hydrated. Make sure that fresh water is always available. If, despite this, he refuses to drink, you can offer it to him with a spoon or with your hand.

Another option for its hydration is to give it a homemade broth. Cook chicken or turkey with carrots, always without salt, or seasonings, or garlic, or onion. Then, strain it and serve it when it has warmed enough so that it does not burn.

After those prudential hours of fasting, it is time to resume your diet progressively. His stomach is still weak and sensitive, so we must go little by little. The best thing in these cases is to opt for a soft diet very similar to that recommended for humans with diarrhea.

Cook chicken or turkey meat – always without bones – with rice and easily digestible vegetables such as carrots or pumpkin. The proper proportion is 70% meat and 30% rice and vegetables. Do not add salt or spices. Cut the vegetables and shred the meat into small pieces for better digestion.

To recover from diarrhea we must offer small portions of food, although more frequently, to avoid indigestion that worsens the situation. If you wish, you can add a French omelette made with one egg, or a tablespoon of natural yogurt or kefir without sugar or lactose.
