Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown has announced that he will be stepping down from his position in October to become the President and CEO of Western Regional Off-Track Betting (WROTB). This decision comes after WROTB approved a three-year contract for Brown, who expressed that he felt it was the right time to take on a new role.
During his time as mayor, Brown highlighted the city’s progress, including its first population increase in 70 years, the most diverse workforce in history, and record development. To officially take on his new role at WROTB, Brown must obtain a gaming license from New York State, which is currently in process.
In Brown’s absence, Buffalo Common Council president Chris Scanlon will serve as acting mayor until a general election in November 2025. Scanlon expressed his readiness to lead the city and outlined his priorities, including affordable housing, public safety, education, and the overall wellbeing of Buffalo residents.
At 66 years old, Brown is the longest-serving mayor in Buffalo’s history, having first taken office in 2006. He will succeed Henry Wojtaszek as the President of WROTB, who is set to retire at the end of the year.
The transition of leadership in Buffalo marks a significant change for the city, with Scanlon stepping into the role of acting mayor and Brown moving on to a new chapter in his career. Residents can expect a continued focus on the city’s growth and development under Scanlon’s leadership, as he aims to ensure that every corner of Buffalo is well served and represented.
As Buffalo prepares for this transition, it is a time of reflection on the progress made under Brown’s leadership and anticipation for the future under new leadership. The city’s residents can look forward to continued efforts to address key issues such as affordable housing, public safety, education, and overall quality of life.
