The Volkswagen brand presented yesterday the prototype ID. 2all, the small affordable electric that will be manufactured in Martorell from 2025. It is the German version of the Urban Rebel, which Cupra advanced last year and which will also be made in Martorell. He is a strong candidate to stand up to Tesla.

VW explained that its intention is to sell the new vehicle for less than 25,000 euros. According to advanced data yesterday, it will have up to 450 kilometers of autonomy, front-wheel drive and advanced technological functions for driving assistance. “The ID. 2all will be as spacious as a Golf and as affordable as a Polo”, VW highlighted in a statement, in which it also explained that in direct current fast charging stations, the battery can be recharged from 10 to 80% in just 20 minutes.

“We are accelerating the transformation to take electric mobility to the next level,” said Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand.

The new electric, with the Cupra and VW versions, is the main axis of the Volkswagen and Seat project that has been submitted to the aid of Perte, together with the Sagunt battery factory. The possibility of the vehicle also being manufactured under the Skoda brand had been considered, although the latest plans suggest that the Czech brand will bet on an SUV that will be made at the VW factory in Landaben (Navarra).

For the introduction of the electric car, investments amounting to 3,000 million euros have been planned in Martorell and another 1,000 million in Landaben.

This small vehicle is not enough, however, to maintain the volume of employment at the Martorell plant. For this reason, the works council, chaired by Matías Carnero, has been demanding for a long time the allocation of a second manufacturing platform, with larger electric vehicles. “We are working for it” has said on several occasions Wayne Griffiths, CEO of Seat and Cupra.

At the moment, there are electrical plans for Cupra but not for Seat. The group plans to make a decision on the future and continuity of the Seat brand shortly.
