Many Southcrest residents in South San Diego are still facing challenges as they try to rebuild their homes following the devastating floods that hit the community earlier this year. With the Thanksgiving weekend fast approaching, homeowner Eddie Menjivar shared that the holiday season feels different this year.

Menjivar expressed his disappointment, stating that the Christmas spirit seems to have disappeared for him and his family. He mentioned that he usually decorates his house with Christmas lights during this time of year, but the current situation has made it impossible. Since the hotel vouchers expired back in June, Menjivar has had to convert his garage into a makeshift apartment where he, his wife, and son currently reside.

The flood not only caused significant damage to his home but also resulted in the loss of six cars and all his tools. Menjivar is eagerly waiting for the completion of repairs on his main home, which still requires new windows and doors. He also mentioned that the insurance process has been slow, further delaying the restoration of his property.

Despite the challenges, Menjivar remains hopeful that if the doors and windows are replaced before Christmas, he might be able to fulfill his wish of returning home in time for the holidays. The City of San Diego’s Storm Water Department has been actively involved in the cleanup efforts, having removed over 9,000 tons of debris and vegetation from various channels across the city, with a significant portion cleared from the Chollas Creek Watershed.
