Just five days ago Virginia Torrecilla announced her retirement from professional football. The former Barça and Atlético de Madrid player hung up her boots at the age of 29 and after having overcome a brain tumor in 2020. They have not been easy years and she needed to return home, where football has found her again.
This Monday night, Atlético Baleares announced by surprise the incorporation of the Spanish international to their ranks. “The magic of Christmas is not over yet…” could be read in the message that headed the video with which the club made this brand new signing official.
“Virginia makes this decision to be closer to her family and return to her homeland. She joins the ATBFem project to remain linked to this sport and help the team that plays in the 2nd RFEF to achieve promotion to the silver category of Spanish Football,” explained Atlético Baleares, which will have the midfielder until the end of the season.
Torrecilla reappeared in January 2022, after two years fighting cancer. He did not have continuity at Atlético and in the summer he headed to Villarreal, with whom he has played this season until his retirement last week. The midfielder already trained yesterday with her new teammates and will be able to make her debut this weekend against Athletic Club C, whom they host on Sunday (3pm).
