The Council of Ministers agreed this Tuesday to award Ricky Rubio (El Masnou, 1990) the Grand Cross of Sports Merit, the highest sporting distinction in the State. Rubio announced his retirement from the NBA on January 4.
The Catalan point guard has two Olympic medals in his record, one silver and one bronze. The spokesperson for the Spanish government, Pilar Alegría, has recalled Rubio’s social work through his foundation.
“This distinction has been received by great stars in our country,” Alegría recalled, “and we understood that Ricky Rubio’s career made him worthy of this recognition, because he is an example on and off the track.”
