Veterans Unite to Honor Marine Hero
A group of veterans, along with lawmakers, are urging President Donald Trump to award an 87-year-old Marine Corps hero, Maj. James Capers, the Medal of Honor. This call to action comes after Capers was overlooked by former President Joe Biden.
Maj. James Capers, a true legend, served in the Vietnam War and demonstrated immense bravery in a critical moment. In 1967, his recon group was ambushed and overwhelmed by North Vietnamese troops in Phú Lộc. Despite sustaining severe injuries from claymore mines that ripped open his stomach and broke his leg, Maj. Capers valiantly led his Marines in holding off the enemy long enough for a medevac flight to arrive.
The survival of Capers and his fellow Marines was solely due to his extraordinary actions. Despite receiving multiple gunfire wounds and 19 pieces of shrapnel, Capers continues to suffer from his wounds to this day. Yet, the heroism displayed by Capers earned him the Bronze Star, later upgraded to the Silver Star. However, many believe that Capers deserves the nation’s highest military honor, the Medal of Honor, for his actions at Phú Lộc.
An Unsung Hero’s Story
After the war, Maj. Capers continued to serve in the Marines and became a pivotal figure in the “Ask a Marine” program. He shared his experiences, inspiring countless young Americans to serve their country. Despite his remarkable contributions, Capers has been overlooked for the Medal of Honor. This lack of recognition has left his friends concerned, given his advanced age and frail health.
Bill Cortese, a Marine Corps vet and one of Capers’ supporters, expressed confidence that under Trump’s administration, Capers would finally receive the recognition he deserves. Cortese emphasized Capers’ inspiring journey, overcoming racism and obstacles to serve his country and never seeking recognition based on the color of his skin. Cortese believes that Capers’ story is one that can unify the nation.
The Push for Recognition
Efforts to honor Capers have gained momentum, with 47 members of the U.S. House and Senate formally requesting Trump to award Capers the Medal of Honor. These lawmakers highlighted Capers’ selfless actions, leadership, courage, and initiative during his missions in Vietnam. They underscored that Capers’ valor serves as a shining example for all servicemen and women.
As part of the movement advocating for Capers’ recognition, Cortese expressed gratitude for the lawmakers’ support. He emphasized the importance of honoring those who have paved the way and recognizing the tradition of valor in the Marine Corps. Cortese, as a Marine Corps veteran himself, stressed the significance of paying tribute to legends like Maj. Capers.
In a world where politics often overshadow heroism, the push to honor Maj. James Capers reflects a deep respect for service and sacrifice. As the nation awaits a decision on this long-overdue recognition, the story of Capers serves as a reminder of the courage and selflessness that define true heroes.
