Montsant is a symbol for the Priorat. It is not the highest mountain nor the most extensive, but its orography fascinates, with most of its perimeter walled by risks and rocks.
And now that we are in Holy Week, it is worth highlighting the spiritual relationship with Montsant for centuries. Two examples of this are the founding of the first charterhouse in the Iberian Peninsula—Scala Dei—and the intense hermitage tradition, which has survived to this day.
Montsant is a mountain, since all the towns are in its outer perimeter. In 2002 it was declared a Natural Park by the Government of Catalonia.
Only through a “grau”, that is, one of the natural passes of the mountain, can we overcome the cliffs. Some are more comfortable than others, narrower, where only one person can pass.
In spring, like these days, you can enjoy Montsant with its flora, although what this mountain range offers us most is its stone walls.
