I have captured for La Vanguardia Readers’ Photos the moment of sunrise with a very calm sea from L’Escala, in the Alt Empordà region.

As we can see in the image, the solar pillar illuminates the waters of the coast while the portion of sky that surrounds the sun acquires a flushed color between yellowish and orange.

A pillar light is an atmospheric optical phenomenon in which a vertical beam of light appears to extend above and/or below a light source. The effect is created by the reflection of light from small ice crystals that are suspended in the atmosphere or that comprise high-altitude clouds (for example, cirrostratus or cirrus clouds).

If the light comes from the sun (usually when it is near or even below the horizon), the phenomenon is called a solar pillar, as in this case in L’Escala.

The name L’Escala comes from Roman times, Scala, which means dock or place where ships dock. Nowadays we can enjoy the port, the coves and beaches, especially now that summer is getting closer and closer.
