Assocome, the association of wholesale companies from Mercabarna, has once again demanded this Wednesday the application of a super-reduced VAT for fresh products. “Spain applies a VAT for fresh meat and fish that can double that of neighboring countries such as France, Germany or Italy,” they have expressed through a statement.

The association of the food estate of Barcelona and its metropolitan area, which brings together almost 600 companies, has recalled that during the last fifteen years it has “repeatedly requested super-reduced VAT for all fresh food”. They explain that Spain applies 10% of this tax to fresh meat and fish, while France reaches 5.5%, Germany 7% and Italy 4%.

In fact, the Mercabarna wholesalers report that last January a bill was proposed to the Government of Spain demanding a VAT reduction, which “was rejected”.

“The modification of the tax would have an effective impact to fill the shopping basket and would also be noticeable in the restoration,” they have argued. “It would have a direct impact on the final price of the product. It is a measure that represents a benefit for the consumer,” they added.

On the other hand, Assocome considers it “opportune” that “the temporary abolition of VAT for fruit and vegetables, decreed by the Government of Spain, is extended during the second half of the year.”
