The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, is following “with concern and attention” the attacks on her diplomatic offices in Berlin, where the car of an Italian embassy official has been burned, and on the Barcelona consulate.
On Friday, as indicated by the Italian Executive in a note, the car of the first counselor of the Italian embassy in Berlin, Luigi Estero, burned in an arson attack. “To this episode is added the violation of our general consulate in Barcelona with acts of vandalism,” added Meloni.
For his part, the Italian vice president and foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, gave more details of the attack in Barcelona through a statement in which he called for “bright light” on the “dynamics of these acts.”
“Yesterday afternoon unknown persons broke the window of the building where the Consulate General is located in Barcelona, ??defacing a wall at the entrance of the building,” Tajani explained.
Last December, in a similar attack, a car that belonged to the first counselor of the Italian Embassy in the Greek capital, Susanna Schlein, was set on fire.
Meloni said at the time that the attack was “probably of anarchist origin” and expressed her “deep concern” about what happened.
Susanna Schlein is the sister of Elly Schlein, who sounds like one of the strongest candidates to replace Enrico Letta at the helm of the Democratic Party leadership, the main Italian progressive force and the country’s second largest party.
