Bàsquet Girona has announced Aíto García Reneses as the entity’s new coach. The man from Madrid will assume the reins in the team’s first adventure in the ACB after the historic promotion achieved last season.
The coach, who will turn 76 in December, has a long career in the European basketball elite. His last team had been ALBA Berlin, which he directed from 2017 to 2021. He will replace Jordi Sargatal on the bench, although the statement does not specify how many seasons he signs for.
“After a sabbatical year, I have decided to accept the offer from Bàsquet Girona to continue training. Right now I am waiting to form the best possible team to work with the greatest enthusiasm, improve the players and achieve the best results”, Aíto said in statements to the club.
The president and player of Girona, Marc Gasol, is satisfied with having managed to incorporate him. “We are very happy that Aíto is joining the project, wanting to start working to put together the squad for the 2022/23 season starting today,” said the legendary player, who will continue at the club for another season.
García Reneses made more than a thousand appearances as coach in the ACB in the 2013/14 season (1,077 in total). During his career in Spanish basketball he has directed Barça (14 seasons), Penya (7), Unicaja Málaga (3), Sevilla (2) and Gran Canaria (2).
In ALBA Berlin he won the German Cup and the Bundesliga twice, as well as competing in the Euroleague. In the next few days, the technical organization chart that will accompany Aíto in the debut season of Bàsquet Girona in the Endesa League will be known.
