TEHRAN (Iran aEUR) Five people were killed and 44 more injured by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that struck southern Iran on Saturday, according to state television.

According to the report, rescue teams were deployed close to Sayeh Khosh village (epidemic center), which is home for around 300 people in Hormozgan provincial, about 1,000 km (620 miles) from Tehran.

Aftershocks continued to rock the area following the early morning earthquake, which also caused damage to buildings and infrastructure. People took refuge in the streets.

According to the report, the earthquake was felt in many countries nearby.

In recent weeks, the area has experienced several moderate earthquakes. Two magnitude 6.4 and magnitude 6.3 earthquakes in November resulted in the death of one man.

Iran is located on major seismic faults. It experiences an average of one earthquake per day. A magnitude 6.6 earthquake in 2003 flattened Bam, causing 26,000 deaths. In 2017, a magnitude 7 earthquake in western Iran killed over 600 people and left more than 9,000 injured.
