Badalona presented the new Special Police Intervention Group (GEIP) of the Badalona Urban Guard (Barcelonès Nord) tonight in Plaza de la Vila. The new reinforcement and intervention unit of the local police, which takes over from the Omega Unit, has been operational since that same night. It is staffed with 18 agents and two commanders who are distributed in two shifts from Monday to Thursday from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. and on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of holidays, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

In the presentation, Mayor Xavier Garcia Albiol showed his conviction that the new GEIP will help give peace of mind to the streets and areas of the city where there are the most conflicts. “This unit will allow us to take a leap in quality because we will be able to provide a quick and effective response to the problems of incivility and crime that occur,” especially during nights and weekends.

Garcia Albiol has reiterated his government’s firm commitment to security and has detailed the next actions he is preparing in this area. “Our work does not end here, today we are presenting the GEIP and we would like, in a few months, to be able to present neighborhood guards patrolling on foot and provide more services and more Urban Guard agents to the streets of our city” , has manifested.

Within the powers of the local police, among other functions, the Special Police Intervention Group (GEIP) can be developed in situations of criminal acts or in situations of incivility, especially when they occur in public spaces, in leisure areas or during concentrations of people to guarantee neighborhood coexistence.

The new police group is prepared to act quickly and support the Urban Guard patrols in cases that exceed their operational capacity and in emergencies, and act in coordination with other police forces in major operations. In addition, it will also carry out special traffic devices, carry out controls and inspections in establishments that cause coexistence problems and carry out administrative police work.

The mayor has welcomed the new unit, which he has formed in the Plaza de la Vila with one of the new vans equipped for the service, with the presence of the first deputy mayor, Juan Fernández, the councilor of the Citizen Security Area , Juan Manuel Ruiz, as well as the councilors of the government and the top officials of the local police and numerous neighbors who attended the presentation.
