A gas leak that occurred accidentally in the expansion works at the Trueta hospital in Girona has forced the preventive evacuation of around 200 people, including patients and healthcare personnel, this afternoon, and forced the care activity of the nearest services to stop.
Specifically, the event has forced the evacuation of the entire building of the Institut Català d’Oncologia, where radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments are carried out, as well as the nuclear medicine service.
The hospital pharmacy and pathology area staff, those closest to the gas leak, have also been evacuated and heliport activity has been paralyzed. Between 150 and 200 people have been evacuated.
The professionals have been transferred to the outside of the hospital, while the patients who had to continue with the treatment have been relocated to other spaces in the hospital center.
The leak occurred accidentally during the expansion works of the surgical block and the oncohematology day hospital. The situation has forced the Firefighters and the Local Police to cordon off the affected area and after the mandatory measurements to detect the presence of gas, the activity returned to normal.
