Antonio Hernández, a resident of Santa Perpètua de Mogoda (Vallès Occidental), has been proclaimed the winner of the Underpants Eating Contest that was held this Sunday in Valls (Tarragona) by swallowing 240 units of this elongated onion, the organization of the event has informed .
The contest has put an end to the 42nd Great Calçotada Festival 2024, which was held this Sunday in Valls, and which has attracted some 30,000 people to the Tarragona town to taste the gastronomy derived from this product.
After Hernández, who accounted for a little over three kilos of underpants, Ramon Caballero, from Barcelona, ??came in second place, with 196 underpants consumed, while the third place was occupied by Ramon Florès, from Valls, who ate 190 .
The winners of this edition have benefited from the absence this year of the twelve-time champion of the competition, the Barcelonan Adrià Wegrzyn, since the organization modified the regulations so that the champion of an edition could not appear the following year.
At almost two meters high, the one known as the ‘calçots monster’ holds the absolute record for the number of onions devoured in three-quarters of an hour, more than 300 with a weight close to six kilos. The year Adrià broke the record, his father, Constantin Wegrzyn, of Austrian origin and who has also participated in several editions of the contest, came in second place.
