Respecting the expiration or best-before dates of food is essential for our health. Even if we keep them in the refrigerator, fresh foods and leftovers go bad after a certain time. This results in either throwing away food or consuming it, risking your health.

To clear up doubts, Dr. Manuel Viso shares on his Instagram profile (@manuelvisothedoc, with 55 thousand followers), a video detailing how long food lasts in the refrigerator without resulting in a loss of quality and food safety. Now, we must keep in mind that all these durations will also depend on how fresh the food is when we put it in the refrigerator.

The refrigerator should be at a maximum of 4ºC, but the doctor points out that at this temperature the bacteria continue to multiply. “Therefore, after these times, food deteriorates and bacteria multiply,” he notes. This produces changes in the taste, smell and texture of the food.

However, the doctor emphasizes that there are some foods that do not change color, texture, or flavor despite being contaminated by bacteria and being potentially dangerous. Therefore, it is important to be careful and not exceed the times indicated above.
