CLEVELAND, Ohio — A Brooklyn man is accused of shooting and killing a 24-year-old man in front of a bar on Cleveland’s West Side.
Dominique Williams, 26, is charged with aggravated murder in connection with the death of Derrick Yanetta.
The shooting happened about 2:30 a.m. Friday outside of M & M Saloon on Lorain Avenue near West 125th Street in the city’s Jefferson neighborhood, according to a police report.
Yanetta was found on the sidewalk in front of the bar with gunshot wounds to his chest. He was pronounced dead at MetroHealth, police said.
An Amsterdam, Ohio police officer working an off-duty security shift at the bar heard the gunfire, saw Yanetta on the ground and spotted Williams running away, police said.
The officer gave chase and the pair exchanged gunfire. Williams was struck by a bullet and later treated at Fairview Hospital for a gunshot wound to his buttocks, police said.
Williams was later released from the hospital and arrested.
He was slated to appear for arraignment Tuesday in Cleveland Municipal Court, according to court documents.
Williams was released from jail earlier this month, court records say. He was initially arrested Sept. 29 in connection with a Cleveland police drug case, then pleaded no contest to attempted drug possession on Feb. 3. A judge sentenced him to time served, records say.
Williams also pleaded no contest to charges of burglary, attempted aggravated robbery, and two counts of robbery in unrelated 2012 cases in Cuyahoga County, records say.
The shooting outside M & M Saloon came about one month after police investigated another shooting outside the same bar. A 25-year-old man was shot in the back during that incident after another man asked him if he was a member of the Heartless Felons gang, records say.
