Mercedes Trujillo Callealta, known to the general public as Merche, is one of the most important established artists in our country. The woman from Cádiz appeared in the Eurosong contest in 2001 with her song Don’t ask for more love, a song with which she tried to represent our country in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Despite the fact that she placed sixth and that she ultimately did not go to the European competition, this experience gave her the opportunity to record an album, something that Merche took advantage of, achieving great success with her first album: Mi sueño.
After her first album, Merche’s career took off and her songs were successful at a time when it was difficult to compete against the phenomenon Operación Triunfo. 20 years later, Merche still has a very important place in the music industry in our country.
In a radio interview for the SER network, Merche said that her beginnings were not easy, since many asked her “who composed her songs” or “who was behind her projects” because she thought that she alone could not I could do it: ”Today, thank God, that’s not the case anymore, but it seemed that by wearing a miniskirt, having blonde hair around my waist and wearing high heels, I was already incapable of doing anything professional, a man with a tie had to be directing all”.
During the interview, the current Tu Cara Me Suena contestant acknowledged that she always fought against that machismo that was found at every step of her career: “Miniskirt, right? Well, I would put it shorter. Everything was a claim. And don’t think that much was understood at first, huh.”
“Fortunately, nowadays there are so many young artists that no one doubts that they are the ones leading their projects, but in my case it was hard for me,” explained the singer of Abre tu mente in one of her most sincere public conversations.
