An 88-year-old woman has been critically injured this morning when she drowned on the Somorrostro beach in Barcelona. Subsequently, she has been transferred to the Hospital del Mar, where she has lost her life.

The 112 emergency telephone number received a notice at 9:39 a.m. warning that there was a woman floating in the water. At the time of the events, the lifeguard service had not yet started and, therefore, no flag was flying. This afternoon, there is a yellow flag on the beach due to the state of the sea.

The Medical Emergency System (SEM) has mobilized three land units to the scene, which have transferred the woman in critical condition to Hospital del Mar. Hospital sources have confirmed his death in the center.

This is the fifteenth fatality in the summer campaign period (from June 15 to September 15). On the same dates last year, there were 10 fatal drownings on Catalan beaches.

Civil Protection has asked for extreme precautions on beaches, swimming pools and inland waters.
