The Tornabous banana tree, in the Urgell region, has a past that appears captured in these photographs in The Photos of the Readers of La Vanguardia reflected in black and white, like the bee boxes and the twines that are also part of the path that leads to this emblematic tree.
It is a large, monumental banana tree, located in the middle of the irrigated fruit fields of the Canal de Urgell, near the road to the town of Tornabous.
As an information sign indicates, thanks to its height (23 meters) it is a reference and meeting point for people in the area, as if it were a lighthouse tree.
In 2011 the Town Council of Tornabous declared it a Tree of Local Interest. It is located halfway between Tarròs and the Iberian town of Molí d’Espígol.
In reality, there are three unique and relatively close banana trees in these lands: Plataners de Pinell (Puiggrròs, les Garrrigues), the Plataner de Vila-sana (Vila-sana, Pla d’Urgell) and the Plataner de Tornabous (Tornabous, Urgell) .
