Corryn Freeman, a South Florida woman, shared her experience of receiving a racist and insensitive text message following the recent general election. The text she received informed her that she had been “selected to pick cotton” on a plantation, which left her feeling targeted and fearful for her safety. Freeman received the message around 5 p.m. and was initially afraid and nervous about who could have sent it.

However, she later discovered that she was not the only one who received such messages. Two of her friends from different states also reported receiving similar texts, indicating that it was not directly targeted at her. Reports have shown that Black and brown individuals in over 20 states, including children, students, and adults, received these disturbing messages, some of which mentioned being picked up by “slave catchers” in a van.

One variation of the message even claimed to be from an associate of President-elect Donald Trump, causing shock and alarm among recipients. Despite this, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign has denied any involvement with these text messages. NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson condemned the messages as a reflection of the increasing hateful rhetoric from racist groups in the country.

Freeman expressed her concern that these messages could be a form of foreign interference aimed at creating further division and instability in the country. She emphasized the importance of unity and peace, envisioning an America where all cultures are celebrated and respected. Despite ongoing investigations by federal and local authorities, the sender of these texts has not yet been identified.

These incidents highlight the need for continued efforts to combat racism and promote inclusivity in society. It is crucial for individuals to stand against such hateful messages and work towards a more harmonious and accepting community for all. By raising awareness and fostering dialogue, we can strive towards a future where diversity is embraced and celebrated.
