“Venom: The Last Dance”, despite not being a huge hit in North American theaters, has managed to hold the top spot at the box office for three consecutive weeks. The superhero sequel collected $16.2 million in ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada, beating out new releases like Hugh Grant’s horror thriller “Heretic” and the holiday movie “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”.
The decision by major studios to withhold new releases ahead of the election allowed “Venom: The Last Dance” to maintain its position at the box office. While the film may not have performed as well domestically as expected, it has been a success internationally, grossing $279.4 million overseas and bringing its global total to $394.2 million.
“Heretic” and “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” competed for the second-place spot, with “Heretic” debuting with $11 million in Friday-Sunday ticket sales. Despite mixed audience reactions, “Heretic” is expected to turn a profit with its budget under $10 million. On the other hand, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” received a positive response from audiences and was modestly budgeted at about $10 million.
In its seventh week, “The Wild Robot” from Universal and DreamWorks Animation continues to perform well, landing in fourth place with $6.6 million in ticket sales. Meanwhile, films like Sean Baker’s “Anora” and the papal thriller “Conclave” starring Ralph Fiennes have also maintained strong performances at the box office.
Overall, ticket sales remain sluggish compared to previous years, with box office running about 11% behind last year. However, upcoming releases like “Red One” starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, “Gladiator II”, “Wicked”, and “Moana 2” are expected to boost box office numbers in the coming weeks.
Despite the current challenges faced by the film industry, the Thanksgiving corridor is expected to bring positive success stories. With big releases lined up, there is hope for a resurgence in box office numbers in the near future.
