The Mageseeker is the newest adventure in the League of Legends universe. Developed by the Valencian studio Digital Sun, this title tells the story of Sylas, a wizard imprisoned in the kingdom of Demacia who flees from his captors to start a rebellion. The game mixes action with role-playing elements and a very careful pixel art aesthetic.

For decades, the kingdom of Demacia has persecuted and imprisoned wizards in the name of public order. They kidnap them and try to indoctrinate them. The story of The Mageseeker begins when Sylas, a magician expert in stealing magic and spells, gains the powers of his only friend so far: Lux. Thanks to this he can break his chains and start a rebellion to free Demacia from this tyranny that oppresses magicians.

Sylas and Lux are well known League of Legends characters. In fact, one of The Mageseeker’s goals is to expand the history of the Runeterra universe by giving more depth to some of its champions. Without going into too many spoilers, at the beginning of the adventure Garen also appears, a proud and noble soldier of the kingdom of Demacia and Lux’s brother.

These video games set in the world of Runeterra are published under the A League of Legends Story collection through the publisher Riot Forge, owned by the Californian company Riot Games. The development of the projects is carried out by other external studies, normally independent. In this case, The Mageseeker has been developed in Valencia with the Digital Sun studio.

Speaking to La Vanguardia, the CEO of Digital Sun, Javier Giménez, has assured that “developing The Mageseeker has been a very good experience” and adds that “in the team many of us are very fond of League of Legends and that Riot Forge contacted us to develop their new title in the Runeterra universe after having played Moonlighter – the previous Digital Sun game – we were very excited”.

“As for the story, although the plot has been defined by us, it is true that Riot has to make sure that even the smallest detail is consistent with the League of Legends universe and that we are respectful of the personality of the champions”, assures Javier Giménez. But he also adds that “from the beginning, the Riot Forge team made it clear to us that the game was ours and we had a lot of freedom in terms of design and execution, as well as mechanics.”

The new thing from this Valencian studio is an action title with hints of RPG and an almost overhead point of view that is very focused on the fighting. Sylas has the power to steal magic and most of the core mechanics revolve around it. Beyond melee with fast attack and strong attack, Sylas can also use the chains hanging from his arms to grab enemies and steal their powers.

Thanks to this ability, the protagonist can temporarily use different spells and launch elemental attacks of fire or ice, for example. Each enemy is weak to a specific element, so it’s important to think about how this power is used at all times. In a bit of an impromptu way, Sylas becomes the leader of a rebellion of wizards in the kingdom of Demacia and, as he completes missions, more people will join his cause.

According to Javier Giménez, the best thing about having developed a title for Riot is that the studio has been able to “work in a universe that we are fans of and we also like to know that our game will reach a lot of people thanks to how popular League of Legends is.” ”. But along these same lines, the CEO of Digital Sun also affirms that “the worst part of this is precisely that responsibility that comes from knowing that you have to try to live up to it and being aware that many people are going to look closely at what what are you doing”.

The Mageseeker arrives today on almost all platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC.
