Companies dedicated to the development of mobile technology continue to work to improve the fifth generation of the mobile network, 5G, to go one step further and achieve new functions. This is the case of 5G Broadcast, a new tool created by Cellnex Telecom that allows broadcasting Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) content or live radio from your smartphone, with low battery consumption and without having to use a Wi-Fi connection. or mobile data (connect to the Internet).
So far several tests have been carried out to test the performance of this project. The last ones took place during the ISE (Integrated Systems Europe) international audiovisual sector show and the Mobile World Congress 2023, last February. There they broadcast the content that was broadcast on La 1 and Canal 24h in television mode and Radio 5 in the radio mode, thanks to the commitment that the technology company sealed with RTVE.
During the test, it was also possible to see and listen to the contents of TV3 and Catalunya Rà dio, within the framework of the agreement signed with the Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals (CCMA), since they were on Catalan regional soil. “As the leader in DTT broadcasting in Spain, Cellnex is at the forefront of the European broadcast innovation roadmap,†said Eduardo Fichmann, Global Director of Innovation and Product Strategy at Cellnex. “5G technology continues to improve day by day. With this test to test 5G Broadcast abroad, we can show that the technology is up to the new needs of the audience.â€
In the tests carried out by the project, which has been launched together with Rohde Schwarz, Ateme and Qualcomm Technologies, they demonstrated that in order to view the contents that are broadcast on digital terrestrial television, it was not necessary to use a SIM card, in addition to the fact that it is It is possible to have a large number of users watching streaming content without the network going down.
This new technology is being deployed and the evolution of 5G offers new alternatives to the distribution of television content by DTT, and the distribution of radio content by FM or medium wave. Thus, from the same communications tower, in addition to the telephone service, it will be possible to broadcast radio and television content on the same support and, in this way, view the content in streaming through the mobile device without using the data . They will broadcast content with UHD quality, in addition to expanding hybrid services, such as LOVEStv.
“5G Broadcast technology has the potential to transform the way content services are delivered, without compromising existing mobile services,†said Mohamed Aziz Taga, Head Business Development
“5G will enable broadcasters to transform their business and meet the needs of highly connected young generations. Ateme is delighted to be part of this transformational journey with Cellnex, driving the delivery of highly engaging and immersive experiences to viewers on any connected device,†said Williams Tovar, Director of 5G Media Streaming Solutions at Ateme.
