Attorneys representing Sean “Diddy” Combs have accused the government of leaking a video showing the hip-hop mogul assaulting his former girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, to the media. They filed a motion in the Southern District of New York requesting the judge to potentially exclude the footage from the trial.
The motion references a 2016 hotel surveillance video that was exclusively published by CNN, which depicts Combs dragging and kicking Ventura. Combs’ legal team alleges that the government leaked the video to CNN, but they did not provide any concrete evidence to support their claims. CNN has chosen not to comment on the matter.
Currently, Combs is in federal custody awaiting trial on charges of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation for prostitution, to which he has pleaded not guilty. Additionally, he is facing several civil lawsuits accusing him of various forms of sexual misconduct and illegal activities.
In addition to the leaked video, Combs’ attorneys claim that authorities also informed the media about searches conducted at his residences in Los Angeles and Miami in March. They argue that these leaks have tainted the jury pool and are depriving Combs of a fair trial. As a result, they have requested a gag order to prevent the government from sharing information about the case with the media.
The attorneys suggest that the leaks originated from agents of the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations division, rather than prosecutors involved in the case. Spokespersons for HSI New York and the US attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York have declined to comment on the matter.
According to Combs’ legal team, prosecutors confirmed that they did not obtain the hotel surveillance video through the grand jury process and that DHS agents only acquired it after CNN aired the footage. Initially, Combs denied the allegations of abuse made by Ventura in a lawsuit she filed in November 2023, prior to the video’s release. However, after the video became public, Combs issued an apology.
