We have been using artificial intelligence for some time now. For example: although the excellent photographs that we take today on our mobile phones may seem normal to us, with tiny lenses in very small spaces, they would not be possible without the AI ??that is applied in most current phones. Before and after each shot, algorithms analyze millions of data at lightning speed to offer us those magnificent images in a fraction of a second. But ChatGPT arrived in November 2022 to open a new perspective for us. And mobile phones have already opened the season.

The first major manufacturer that has given a new dimension to artificial intelligence to its new models has been Samsung with its Galaxy S24 series, the premium range of the Korean company, which already has a new seal, Galaxy AI, to indicate the presence of creative AI on these devices. Among the first uses that the Korean company has given to artificial intelligence is a practical simultaneous translation in telephone conversations for interlocutors who speak different languages, but there are also practical applications of impact in creative photography, text chats and searches.

Samsung has taken this immersion into AI very seriously. The Korean company has done a study on consumer impressions in different markets. More than half of Spaniards, especially young people from Generation Z (those born between 1996 and 2012), are hopeful that mobile artificial intelligence will improve their lives.

The big question that many people have been asking for a long time is what Apple is doing in this field. As always, what he does is work in silence. Historically, the apple company has given the impression of being behind many technologies until, suddenly, in a presentation it shows that it is several steps ahead of other technologies. The latest impact was its “spatial computing” headset, Vision Pro, the fruit of years of quiet research in its laboratories.

The same thing will probably happen with generative AI. There are already signs that the next World Developers Conference (WWDC), which will be held in June, may be the scene of another of those presentations that leave many of us speechless (myself included). They are in a hurry because everyone is making progress. In Apple Park, meanwhile, there is silence. What would Siri be like if her ‘brain’ were powered by a great language model like GPT-4 that gives life to ChatGPT? Maybe we won’t have to wait long to find out.

February is just around the corner this week. It will be the month of Mobile World Congress (MWC) held in Barcelona. If in recent years the term that was everywhere, around everything, was 5G and its advantages, this year artificial intelligence will be the main technology highlighted in much of what is presented. Mobile phone manufacturers, in a parallel competition to that held by technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, Meta or Amazon, are accelerating so as not to be left behind. We will see many new developments in the coming weeks.
