Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel was taken by surprise when he heard the news that linebacker Shaq Barrett wants to come out of retirement. Barrett, a two-time Super Bowl winner, had signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins in March but announced his retirement on social media in July just before the start of training camp.
McDaniel admitted that he was caught off guard by the reports and mentioned that there hasn’t been any recent communication with Barrett. The Dolphins still hold the rights to the 32-year-old linebacker, and ESPN was the first to report his desire to return to the field.
The coach emphasized that his immediate focus is on the team’s upcoming game against the Green Bay Packers and that he will need to discuss the implications of Barrett’s potential return with the general manager, Chris Grier.
Barrett has an impressive record with 400 tackles, 59 sacks, 22 forced fumbles, and three interceptions over his nine-season career with the Denver Broncos and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was named a second-team All-Pro in 2019 after leading the league with 19 1/2 sacks.
In other news, the Dolphins waived veteran safety Marcus Maye on Tuesday and activated rookie safety Patrick McMorris from injured reserve. Maye, who joined the team in June, appeared in 11 games with three starts this season, recording 30 tackles and a tackle for loss. He could potentially return to the team’s practice squad if he goes unclaimed on waivers.
McMorris, drafted in the sixth round by Miami in April, had been on injured reserve due to a calf injury at the beginning of the season. The move to activate him comes after Maye’s release to make room on the roster.
The Dolphins are making strategic roster adjustments as they prepare for their upcoming games, showing a commitment to optimizing their lineup for success on the field.
