Vice President Kamala Harris recently revealed a plan aimed at empowering Black men by providing them with more economic opportunities and avenues for success. The plan is part of Harris’ efforts to energize a crucial voting bloc that Democrats are concerned may lack enthusiasm.
Harris’ plan includes initiatives such as offering forgivable business loans for Black entrepreneurs, creating more apprenticeships, and studying diseases like sickle cell that disproportionately affect African American men. Additionally, Harris expressed her support for legalizing marijuana and ensuring that Black men have opportunities to participate in the growing cannabis industry.
During a visit to Erie, Pennsylvania, Harris engaged in a conversation with Black men at a local Black-owned business called LegendErie Records and Coffee House. The business is owned by Ishmael and Allana Trainor, who returned to Erie to start their venture after living in Arizona.
In a campaign rally in Erie, Harris criticized former President Donald Trump for suggesting the deployment of the military to handle disruptions on Election Day. Harris’ push to engage Black men in the upcoming election is crucial, especially after former President Barack Obama noted that some Black men may be hesitant to support a woman as president.
To increase support among male voting blocs, including Hispanics, Harris’ campaign launched the “Hombres con Harris” group. The campaign plans to organize gender-specific events like “Black Men Huddle Up” gatherings in battleground states, featuring African American male celebrities and testimonial ads with local Black male voices.
Cedric Richmond, co-chair of the Harris campaign, emphasized the importance of equipping Black men with the tools to thrive economically, such as homeownership, entrepreneurship, and wealth-building opportunities. Harris’ proposals also include plans to distribute forgivable loans to Black entrepreneurs, increase the number of Black male teachers, and expand apprenticeships in Black communities.
Harris’ campaign aims to address health issues that disproportionately affect Black men, such as sickle cell disease, diabetes, prostate cancer, and mental health challenges. The campaign also focuses on regulating cryptocurrency to protect investors, including Black men who are interested in digital assets.
A recent poll showed that a majority of Black voters have a favorable view of Harris and prefer her leadership on various policy issues compared to Trump. The poll indicated strong support for Harris among both Black men and Black women.
Overall, Harris’ plan seeks to empower Black men economically, academically, and health-wise, with the goal of encouraging their participation in the upcoming election and beyond. By addressing key issues affecting Black men and providing opportunities for growth and success, Harris aims to build a stronger and more inclusive community for all.
