Apple raises wages for retail workers, as it faces unionization pressure at its stores.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple’s hourly wages in the U.S. will increase by $22 per hour. In an email, the iPhone maker announced new pay changes and an announcement about an increase in its compensation budget for employees on Wednesday. The expected increase in starting salaries is also for employees.
Apple spokesperson said that “Supporting, retaining the most talented team members in the globe enables us to deliver innovative products and services to our customers,” in a statement to The Wall Street Journal. “We’re increasing our overall compensation budget this year as part our annual performance review process.”
CBS MoneyWatch reached out to Apple for comment but Apple didn’t immediately respond.
Apple workers are pushing for unionization and a place at the negotiating table to increase their pay. One, Apple’s return to office policy has been criticized by workers, who called it “inflexible” and wrote openly to executives.
Workers reacted to the employer’s plan, saying that the Hybrid Working Pilot was one of the worst ways to allow everyone to be together in one place.
The letter stated that we should stop treating us like children who have to be told what homework to complete and when to go where.
Apple CEO Tim Cook’s salary package for this year was $98.7million, which includes a $3,000,000 salary.
